Music pt2 If you're reading this, this is a continuation of the post below, Music. So go and read that one first. Now that it's 10 am on a Monday at school, I don't feel that high anymore. On the contrary, I feel pretty shitty. But the post must go on, huh. Regardless of what you think, it's not just bullshit I'm spouting here. Ok, so on we go. Sad songs. Don't you think that it's kinda ridiculous that a guy who has just lost his girlfriend in a freak car accident can sing in a super-nice controlled voice with vibrato and complicated sounding transitions between lines? Hardly seems to be suffering. There are people out there who literally perform till they cry. Bright Eyes ssounds like that all the time. Listen to the lyrics of the following artists carefully and you'll be rewarded. Death Cab for Cutie (very lyrical; you need powerful English to understand them), Elliott Smith (listen to Evrything Reminds Me of Her, Twilight, Between the Bars), Jeff Buckley (I've mentioned him before; listen to everything you can find. He doesn't have much, anyway, died at age 27), Nick Drake, The Decemberists, Damien Rice (the "king of pain". LISTEN TO HIM. He is good), The Smiths, The Cure, Stars. Love hurts, ooh yeah. Somehow good songs about the joy of love are fewer than the songs about the pain of it, probably because when you're in love you're too busy to write music (or maybe because I like sad songs). But yes they're there; listen to Dogs by Damien Rice, Of Angels and Angles by The Decemberists, A Lack of Colour by Death Cab for Cutie. After singing in choir for some while, you come to realize something; It's not easy, is it? Some people impress you because of their ability to sustain high notes or their perfect pitching. This is basically the technical aspect of music. The same goes for other musical instruments, such as playing the guitar or the piano. You are entranced by how people can play the guitar so fast and accurately that you can only hear and not see the stringe being pressed. In acapella you're impressed by how people can so accurately imitate the sound of a snare drum or a trumpet. This is because you appreciate the difficulty; the technical aspect of the music. Personally, I believe that this sort of technical appreciation is music for music's sake, in that it does not have much use and recognition outside of the various circles it is performed in; fusion jazz for example needs a certain level of skill to even begin to appreciate. Acapella is a bit like that, too (if you want to make the sound of a drum, why the hell don't you just use a real one?), but arguably the human voice is a very beautiful musical instrument and hence in this sense acapella can be appreciated on its own merits. Good acapella groups include Take 6 (they sing mainly gospel and some blues and jazz), Rockapella, The Nylons, and doubtlessly other members know more about this than me. Good fusion (warning; fusion can cause dizziness and disorientation) is played by Chick Corea (fusion jazz pianist), John Pattitucci (bassist), and others. Ask Amos if you're interested in fusion. In this aspect too some metal and rock bands excel. They are generally dubbed "progressive" rock and metal bands. Such bands are Dream Theatre (progressive rock), Liquid Tension Experiment, Tool (progressive metal; they use weird time signatures and harmonies), A Perfect Circle. This type of music typically leaves you awe-struck and going; "I wanna be like that guy one day..." like blithering fools. I believe this type of music is a bit pointless, you know, like showing off without really saying much. Ok, that's enough for now. 10:03 AM
