Music Oh My God Cil's posting something! Oh My God Cil posted something at 4 am! Since it's 4 am and there's still an hour before I'm supposed to be awake, and since I'm high, I shall share a bit of my philosophy of music with you people. What is Music? What does it do? How does it do what it does? Think about that. Me being an avid listener of practically every kind of music available, it kinda pisses me off when people say they like a certain song only because it "sounds nice". There are 2 sides to music; listening to it and making it. Listening to music. What kind of music do you listen to? Why do you listen to the music you listen to? The power of music comes from the fact that it is capable of touching our emotions, our minds, and sometimes our souls. On the outside, music merely 'touches' our emotions; music can soothe us, calm us; music that "sounds nice". Generally people to whom music can only 'touch' do not like any other kind of music because it's uncomfortable. They are unwilling to open up their minds to accept and to feel anything else from their music then what they are already comfortable with. "Nice music" is easily characterized through its usage of particular chord progressions, musical devices (key changes, for instance). It is also proabably the most widely listened form of music, simply because it doesn't need any effort to accept it. Popular music. So what's beyond music that "sounds nice" you may ask? If you let it, if you open your mind, music can awaken and enhance your emotions. Have you ever gotten depressed over a song? Have you ever cried simply listening to a song in the dark on your bed at night? Have you ever been genuinely happy just listening to a line of a song? Through various devices, music can create images, stories, histories, and atomspheres, which in turn may affect you. The first device is tone, achieved through the timbre of the instrument used to create the sound; the human voice, guitar distortions, the ondes martenot, synthesizers, etc and/or through harmonies and chords. These instruments create images, sonic landscape, which may affect you. They can be of peace (listen to Gold in the Air of Summer by Kings of Convenience), space stations above the Earth (Souvlaki Space Station by Slowdive), and a universe of things based on your imagination. For atmospheric music try listening to Radiohead (generally depressing), Blonde Redhead (also depressing and rather creepy), Joe Hisaishi (beautiful stuff), Portishead (weird stuff), Thievery Corporation. Some artists simply have such beautiful voices they just make you tear. Listen to Jeff Buckley. For classical music there's Rachmaninoff and Debussy. Listen to Coldplay (especially Parachutes, very good album), which is just beautiful. Listen to bossa nova (try Desafinado), Martina Topley-Bird, and Bjork. Eric Whitacre (Lux Arumque, Sleep) also does this. All of the above music is music that creates an atmosphere and images. They MAY cause depresssion so be careful. Through lyrics and vocal technique music can create much more specific effects. Rock music, for example, is very simply meant to get you high. Loud and technical, it's supposed to get your adrenalin rushing. Not everybody is capable of 'letting loose', apparently. In fact I have a hypothesis that Asians don't like rock as much because they're from a very rigid society, upholding self-control and image above anything else. Well ANYWAY, why don't you try, just TRY, letting loose for once? When you're in a reckless mood, listen to Killing in the Name Of by Rage Against The Machine or Stockholm Syndrome by Muse. Before you know it you'll be head-banging like all the other metal-heads. Another emotion Rock lets loose is Anger. Anger and frustration. Listen to Rage Against The Machine, Nirvana, Metallica, Muse. Nirvana and grubge music I find particularly helpful if you're the brutally inwardly angry sort of person. Kurt Cobain's voice is very conducive. It is also depressing stuff. Be careful it doesn't get to you too much. Hundreds around the world died when Kurt Cobain commited suicide in 1994. Following closely behind anger and frustration is of course hatred. This I wouldn't recommend. I tend to think people who listen to death metal would be better of with counselling. However, if you're interested listen to Strapping Young Lad, NIN (Industrial music, it literally sounds like grinding), NIM (Finnish rock). On the other side is sadness.
