Thank you. 730pm: House + Stage lights off NJChoir enters Spotlight on Navina and Joel step into the spotlight Navina and Joel speak: Navina: Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Cantabile 21, Celebration! I’m Navina… Joel: …and I’m Joel, and we are your emcees for tonight! Cantabile 21 is a celebration, in more ways than one. It is a joyous celebration of how far the NJC Choir has come over the years. And it is a grateful celebration of the gifts of music and friendship – gifts that we hope to share with you as we bring you our concert this evening. Navina: The opening of tonight’s concert is marked by three remarkable pieces that the Choir has sung in competitions both at home and abroad in the last 2 years. The first, ‘Sanctus’, was part of the Choir’s Gold-With-Honours award-winning performance at this year’s SYF Choral Competition. The beautifully-textured music expresses the peace, joy, and wonder felt by man when contemplating the divine. Joel: The next 2 songs were sung by the Choir at the 17th International Choral Competition 2006 in Verona, Italy, during which it won a Gold award. ‘El Hambo’ was inspired by Swedish folk music. It parodies the Swedish chef from the ever-popular “Muppet Show”, and his famous line: “Dum dur di dur di to be sung by a Chorister”. The next song, “Lay a Garland”, tells the tragic story of a young girl who suffers betrayal in love. The NJC Choir is conducted by Ms Lim Ai Hooi. Navina: Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting the NJC Choir and Choral Director Ms. Lim Ai Hooi. Spotlights off, stage lights on Navina & Joel leave Ms. Lim enters Choir sings Sanctus, El Hambo, Lay A Garland. Ms. Lim stands to one side, Stage lights dim Spotlight on Navina and Joel step into spotlight Navina and Joel speak: Joel: We hope you enjoyed that wonderful start to our concert. The next song, "I Will Follow Him” will take you back to the 1960s when it was written. Relive the energy of the hippie era with its exhilarating tune. Navina: Following that, we have a song that features lyrics from Shakespeare’s famous play, Macbeth. ‘Double Double Toil and Trouble’ conjures up images of a dark forest with 3 evil witches chanting spells over a steaming cauldron. Presenting to you once again, the NJC Choir and Ms Lim Ai Hooi. Spotlight off, stage lights on Navina and Joel exit Choir sings I Will Follow Him, Double Double Toil and Trouble (At the start of ‘I Will Follow Him’, Nanyang Choir to move from Stage Left passageway to wait in the Stage Right passageway.) NJChoir exits and moves to wait in Stage Right passageway. Spotlights on Navina and Joel enter Navina and Joel speak: Navina: This evening, we are honoured to have as our guests the Choir from Nanyang Girls’ High School. Under the baton of Ms. Lim Ai Hooi, the Choir has consistently achieved stellar results at the Singapore Youth Festival Choral Competitions for secondary schools. Joel: The Nanyang Girls’ High School Choir will sing 3 pieces. “Radetski March” is adapted from one of Johann Strauss’s famous compositions. The Japanese song “Mamoru” or “Life Defends” depicts the valiant struggle for life. The vibrant Spanish piece ‘Como Compongo Poco, Yo 'Toy Loco’ uses sound effects to create a crazy, madcap mood that you are sure to enjoy. Let’s put our hands together to welcome the Nanyang Girls’ High School Choir, conducted by Student Conductor Yang Zi. Yang Zi exits Stage lights dim, Nanyang exits Spotlights on Joel and Navina enter Navina: Thank you, Nanyang Girls High School Choir! Ladies and Gentlemen, we now welcome back the NJC Choir to bring you the last three songs of the first half. All 3 are Japanese compositions by Ko Matsushita. Joel: ‘Kodomo’, translated as ‘Children’ is a whimsical portrait of childhood. ‘Yoru’, or ‘Night’ portrays night as something both peaceful and mysteriously frightening. Finally, we have another version of ‘Mamoru’ arranged for mixed voices. Please welcome the NJC Choir and Ms. Lim Ai Hooi. Spotlight off, stage lights on, Joel exits NJChoir enters Ms. Lim enters NJChoir sings Kodomo, Yoru, and Mamoru. Ms. Lim exits NJChoir exits Joel announces intermission backstage while Choir is exiting: Joel: Ladies and gentlemen, we will now have a fifteen-minute intermission. NJChoir waiting Stage Left passageway. Bell rings twice House lights off Stage lights have been on since intermission Joel enters and speaks: Joel: Welcome back to the second half of Cantabile 21. To start this next segment of our concert, let’s put our hands together for our very own a cappella groups, Chiastic Rhyme and Negativ, as they bring you on a whirlwind trip through time with 3 familiar favourites from the last half century. Joel exits, passes mike to Negativ backstage. Chiastic Rhyme enters, sings Lollipop, exits. Negativ enters, sings Rainbow Connection, Superman, split-exit (3 exit left, 3 exit right, pass mike back to Navina). Stage lights dim Spotlights on Navina and Joel enter Navina and Joel introduce Alumni: Navina: Those 3 a cappella songs were definitely enjoyable, weren’t they? Next up is a special performance by our second guest for tonight. Formed in 1994, the National Chorale, made up of alumni from the NJC Choir, has been a familiar and encouraging source of support for the choir. Joel: Tonight, the National Chorale will charm you with a selection of Asian songs. The first, entitled “Hana”, features a familiar Ryukyuan tune from Japan. The next, “Shima E”, is another Japanese piece reflecting the melancholic emotions of a person searching for love. Lastly, feel the pulsating rhythms of the Filipino war-chant, “Iddem-Dem Mallida”. Presenting the National Chorale, conducted by Mr Teo Chye Keong. Spotlight off, stage lights on, Navina exits Alumni enters Chyekeong enters Alumni sings Hana, Shima-E, Iddem Dem Mallida. NJChoir moves to Stage Right passageway when Alumni starts Hana. Chye Keong leaves Alumni leaves, Stage lights dim Spotlight on, Joel and Navina enter Navina: Thank you, National Chorale, for that wonderful performance. The next 2 offerings from the NJC Choir continue to explore the rich musical heritage of the South-East Asian region. The first song, “Caturog Na Nonoy”, from the Bicol region of the Phillipines, is a soothing lullaby that we hope will *not* lull you to sleep! J After that, the Choir will perform “Rosas Pandan”, another Filipino song which features the Balitaw, a dance that enacts a debate between young men and women. Joel: Caturog Na Nonoy and Rosas Pandan will be conducted by our Student Conductors Luo Xingqun and Teng Xiangting respectively. Ladies and Gentlemen, let us all welcome the NJC Choir. Spotlight off, Stage lights on, Joel exits, NJChoir enters Xiangting / Xingqun enters. Choir sings Caturog Na Nonoy; changeover of XT and XQ; Choir sings Rosas Pandan.(Both XQ and XT to move back into their places in the Choir after they conduct.) Navina and Joel enter, speak: Navina: Ladies and Gentlemen, to end off tonight’s concert, the NJ Choir will present to you a medley of songs from one of the most well-known musicals in the history of Broadway, “The Phantom of the Opera”. Experience anew the suspense as well as the romance in these familiar songs before the music reaches its dramatic finale. Do look out for our talented soloists, Xiangting and Cil, who will mesmerize you with their voices. Joel: The Choir will be accompanied on the piano by Mr Seow Aik Keong. As NJC’s resident MEP teacher and no stranger to the Singapore music scene, Mr Seow has won prizes in National Music competitions and performed as a soloist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Presenting to you the National Junior College Choir, conducted by Ms Lim Ai Hooi and accompanied by Mr Seow Aik Keong. Ms Lim and Mr Seow enter. Choir sings Phantom Choir remains on stage, Ms Lim, Mr Seow exit. People presenting flowers and the guys exit Stage lights on Joel and Navina enter, speak: Navina: Ladies and Gentlemen, with that song, we have come to the end of Cantabile 21. Before we reluctantly bid you farewell, the NJC Choir would like to thank all the people who have helped to make this concert possible. First, we would like to thank our Principal Mrs. Virginia Cheng, and our Vice Principals Mr. Mark Lo, Mrs. Poon Wai Chin, and Mr. Eric Too, for all their strong support and encouragement over the years, and for gracing our concert tonight. We would also like to thank our 4 teachers-in-charge, Ms Dorothy Chua, Ms Jessie Koh, Ms Andrea Tan and Ms Teo Sui Ho, for their advice and guidance. Joel: Our warmest appreciation goes to the Nanyang Girls’ High School Choir and our seniors from the National Chorale for being our guest performers.
